Biological Information: Pacific Jack Mackerel are a small, quick maturing pelagic schooling fish with a streamlined metallic blue to olive green body and a silver belly side. They reach maturity by three years old and can live between 20 and 30 years, with spawning occuring offshore between March and June. They are similar to other pelagic schooling fish in that they have boom and bust seasons, meaning sometimes they have a year of high abundance while other years can be relatively low. Pacific Jack mackerel has a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids with a texture and flavor similar to that of salmon making them a healthy alternative option.

Sustainability: Monterey Bay Seafood Watch rates the Pacific Jack Mackerel as a Best Choice. They have a low landing rate in California and are not at a threatened level. They are also considered a Best Choice because of their early maturity age and high spawning biomass.
