Our Partner Boats
Boat:
F/V Killer Whaler: A sturdy 17’ Boston Whaler Sakonnet built in 1976 and powered by a fuel efficient 2011 Yamaha 70hp outboard. A seaworthy combination of stability and efficiency.
Captain: Charles Lambert and Ian Cole
Bio:
Charles and Ian have been avid anglers since a young age and both attended UCSC, focusing on Fisheries Management. Charles went on to work with the Department of Fish and Game as a Field Biologist while Ian worked with the National Marine Fisheries Service as a Fisheries Observer. They have been fishing and working on Ocean2Table together since 2013
Fishing Methods:
Hand Operated Pole and Line: Hook and line fishing aboard the F/V Killer Whaler refers to fishing that is done with rod and reel. This method of fishing is favorable because it allows the angler to be more selective with their catch. Undersized and overfished species can be released alive. It also insures the highest quality due to the individual handling of each fish. Immediately after landing fish we bleed them and place them on ice to ensure they are kept as fresh as possible.
Targeted Species: Lingcod, Halibut, Seabass, Rockfish
Boat:
F/V Mr. Morgan: A 66-foot steel boat built in 1979. It started life as a shrimper in Louisiana before making the trip to California where it has been ever since.
Captain: Steve Fitz
Bio:
Steve Fitz is a native of Massachusetts where he was raised while fishing the local waters. He started out trawling, gill netting and seining for cod along the East Coast before moving to California in 1993 to fish with his uncle, also named Steve Fitz. Today he splits his time between fishing, maintaining the Mr. Morgan, managing the Mr. Morgan Fisheries Inc. and spending time with his wife and daughter at their home in Montara.
Fishing Method:
Scottish Seine:The F/V Mr. Morgan is the only vessel in the United States that is still using the Scottish Seine fishing technique. This method is considered more environmentally benign than other fishing boats that operate under a trawl permit. Scottish Seining requires fishing exclusively over sandy bottoms. It uses lighter gear without the steel cables and heavy trawl doors that are used on a typical trawler. Since the gear cannot be towed over large areas of complex ocean habitat which results in less habitat disturbance on the seafloor. In addition the F/V Mr. Morgan fishes under voluntary requirements set by the Nature Conservancy who play a part in managing the boat’s fishing permit and quotas.
Targeted Species:
Petrale Sole, Chilipepper Rockfish, Sanddabs, Skate and Dungeness Crab
Boat:
F/V Sea Harvest: The Sea Harvest fleet is comprised of several boats. They favor a larger Boston Whalers for their stability, wide open deck space, reliability and speed.
Captains:
Rich, Dan, Walter and Calder Deyerle
Bio:
The Deyerles’s have been fishing commercially in and around the Monterey Bay for many decades. They grew up in Pacific Grove on the Monterey peninsula. They started Sea Harvest after finding it difficult selling their fish to wholesalers and have since grown the business to include several restaurants, fish markets, a fleet of boats and a fish wholesaling business.
Fishing Methods:
Fish Trap & Bottom Set Line: This method uses a line of large baited cages that are left to soak, typically for a day. The traps allow the fish and crabs to enter and not exit. Bottom set line refers to a long line of baited hooks. In some areas this method results in high amounts of unwanted bycatch, longlining for swordfish comes to mind. When targeting Sablefish in this area the bycatch is very low and results in very little environmental disturbance.
Targeted Species:
Sablefish, Rockfish, Lingcod, Halibut & Dungeness Crab
Boat:
F/V Pioneer: The F/V Pioneer is a sturdy 60-foot trawler operated by Captain Guiseppe Pennisi out of Moss Landing. She is becoming well known for her trawling gear which is setting a new bar for sustainability among trawlers.
Captain:
Guiseppe “Joey” Pennisi
Bio:
Guiseppe comes from a long lineage of fishermen. He started fishing at age of 7 in Monterey with his father and brothers Gine and David. Today, when he’s not out at sea or spending time with his family you’ll likely find him working on his innovative nets which reduce by-catch and lightly float over the ocean floor.
Fishing Method:
Light Touch Bottom Trawl: The nets being developed by Guiseppe aboard the F/V Pioneer are an exciting new development in the evolution of trawling nets. Instead of the traditional nets which are dragged along the sea floor, the Pioneer uses mch lighter gear which hovers just a few feet above the bottom which prevents harmful disturbances on the ocean floor. The nets are also tied with a much larger mesh than is typically found which allows smaller fish to pass through while larger ones are retained. Currenly CSUMB is studying the benefits of this new design.
Targeted Species:
Rockfish, Petrale Sole, Dover Sole, Sanddabs, Sablefish, Halibut
Boat:
F/V Krazy Kate: The F/V Krazy Kate is a 20 foot center console skiff with a fiberglass hull. It is powered by a 90hp two stoke outboard.
Captain:
Frankie Cunningham
Bio:
Frankie is a relatively young but experienced local fisherman who was born and raised in Monterey and the surrounding waters. He fishes Hand Operated Pole and LIne, reeling each fish in one at a time. Frankie was taught to fish by his father Jimmy Cunningham who fishes for Crab and Salmon aboard the F/V Margaret E.
Fishing Method:
Hand Operated Pole and Line: When targeting groundfish such as Halibut and Lingcod a hand operated pole is commonly used. Each pole has a lead weight and a live bait rig composed of two single hooks or a single and treble hook. The day begins by catching live bait such as squid, smelt, sanddabs or mackerel which is used to catch the target species. Frozen bait or lures can be used as well.
Targeted Species:
Lingcod, CA White Seabass, Rockfish, Sanddabs and CA Halibut.
Boat:
F/V Four Daughters: is a 45ft. Wooden hulled boat equipped with a puller for bottom set lines and Salmon Trolling gear.

Ty Nyugen
Bio:
Captain Ty has been fishing the Monterey Bay for over a decade on the F/V Four Daughters. He fishes primarily Sablefish, but also targets Salmon seasonally.
Fishing Method:
Bottom Set Line: This method refers to a long line of baited hooks. In some areas this method results in high amounts of unwanted bycatch, longlining for swordfish comes to mind. When targeting Sablefish in this area the bycatch is very low and results in very little environmental disturbance.
Targeted Species:
Sablefish and Salmon
Boat:
F/V Efishent is a 21 foot Wellcraft center console with a fiberglass hull and 150hp 4-stroke Yamaha Outboard

Captain:
John Amaral
Bio:
John Amaral has fished commercially throughout his life from San Luis Obispo to Bodega Bay and back. He mainly targets Sablefish and Dungeness Crab. Each offload comes with a great story from his past that is sure to cause some excitement on the docks.
Fishing Method:
Fish Trap: This method uses a line of large baited cages that are left to soak, typically for a day. The traps allow the fish and crabs to enter and not exit. Traps rest on the seafloor resulting in minimal habitat disturbance. Because the fish or crabs come up alive it is easy to release any unwanted species unharmed.
Targeted Species:
Sablefish and Dungeness Crab
Boat:
The F/V Aloof: is a 15ft Boston Whaler center console with a 60hp 4-Stroke Yamaha Outboard

The F/V Luna Sea is a 30 Ft. fiberglassed hulled boat equipped with Salmon trolling gear and a puller for crab gear.
Captain:
Andrew Corr
Bio:
Andrew worked for the National Marine Fisheries Service as a fisheries observer aboard the west coast groundfish fleet for many years before making the switch to commercial fishing. He bought the Luna Sea in 2017 and currently fishes for Chinook (aka King) Salmon along the Pacific Coast. He plans to target Crab and Sablefish (aka Blackcod) in seasons to come. He currently resides in Santa Cruz. His history in fisheries management gives him a unique perspective as a fisherman that is valuable towards preserving the health of our local species.
Fishing Method:
Trolling Lines: All Salmon fisherman in California use trolling lines to target local Chinook Salmon. Trolling lines are comprised of baited hooks or lures which are brought to depth by heavy lead weights. When the Salmon strikes it can be seen back on the boat and then brought to the surface by hand.
